  • Data collection arrangements

Any patient attending the hospital could be approached to donate tissue to the RPHRTB. Consent is taken by appropriately trained health professionals as part of the established procedure for gaining consent for routine diagnosis or surgical treatment. RPHRTB has developed online training for specifically taking tissue bank consent. Patients can agree to the removal of tissue or blood samples as a necessary part of their procedure and can also consent to donate further samples during routine ongoing care.

We collect tissue arising from cardiothoracic procedures, including, but not limited to: aorta, heart muscle, heart valves, blood vessels, lung, airways, blood, sputum and tumour samples. Frozen and fixed samples are stored in appropriate storage facilities within Papworth, with long-term storage in -80C freezer facilities at offsite locations. A basic dataset is supplied with samples, but researchers can request more detailed routine clinical data stored at Papworth Hospital including previous medical history, serology, treatment details and disease outcomes. Tissue Bank will also support data only projects. No patient identifiable data is released from the RPHRTB and the responsibility for data collection and linkage is limited to RPHRTB staff.

  • Research programme

RPHRTB supports research that may ultimately lead to improved patient care. It is clearly important to support the advancement of medical knowledge by ensuring health related researchers have access to quality tissue, blood samples and associated clinical data. Priority is given to researchers based in the NHS and academia; however tissue and data is also provided to commercial organisations such as pharmaceutical companies to use in their research, but only where the ultimate purpose is the improvement of patient care. Research supported by the Tissue Bank is primarily related to cardiovascular and respiratory disease and thoracic oncology. However tissue and data could be supplied for research into other conditions providing the ultimate aim is the improvement of patient care. It supports a broad range of research which includes basic, translational (experimental medicine) and clinical research. It also provides tissue for QC projects, those improving diagnostic techniques and training of NHS staff. The tissue can be used for a wide range of scientific tests or analysis including production of cell lines and organoid cultures, immunohistochemistry, protein expression, genomics and genetics, organ bath and perfusion studies. RPHRTB does not supply projects to do with testing or safety of products that are not related to healthcare, nor does it supply those involved with reproductive cloning.
