Data collection arrangements
Any patient attending the hospital could be approached to donate tissue to the RPHRTB. Consent is taken by appropriately trained health professionals as part of the established procedure for gaining consent for routine diagnosis or surgical treatment. Patients can agree or disagree to the removal of tissue or blood samples as a necessary part of their procedure and/or for the removal of additional samples related to the operation site. RPHRTB manages a program of information sessions for specifically taking tissue bank consent.
We collect all tissue arising from cardiothoracic procedures, including, but not limited to: aorta, myocardium (heart muscle), heart valves, blood vessels, lung, airways, blood, sputum and tumour samples. We can supply relevant routine clinical data recorded in paper/electronic based medical notes or electronically in hospital databases including previous medical history, investigation, diagnosis and treatment details, age, sex, previous and current medications and disease outcomes. Data stored in the tissue bank is link anonymised using the patient's hospital number to facilitate the collection of additional routine clinical data if required. No patient identifiable data is released from the RPHRTB and the responsibility for data collection and linkage is limited to RPHRTB staff
Research programme
RPHRTB supports high quality research that may ultimately lead to improved patient care. It is clearly important to support the advancement of medical knowledge by ensuring health related researchers have access to quality tissue and blood samples. Priority is given to researchers based in the NHS and academia; however tissue is also provided to commercial organisations such as pharmaceutical companies to use in their research, but only where the ultimate purpose is the improvement of patient care. Research supported by the Tissue Bank is primarily related to cardiovascular and respiratory disease and thoracic oncology. However tissue could be supplied for research into other conditions providing the ultimate aim is the improvement of patient care. The RPHRTB supports a broad range of research which includes basic, translational (experimental medicine) and clinical research. It also provides tissue for QA projects and those improving diagnostic techniques. It does not supply projects to do with testing or safety of products that are not related to healthcare, nor does it supply those involved with animal testing, or reproductive cloning. The tissue can be used for a wide range of scientific tests or analysis including production of cell lines, immunohistochemistry, protein expression, genomics and genetics, organ bath and perfusion studies.
