Data collection arrangements
The Generic Biobank will collect tissue, blood and other samples from patients who are diagnosed or referred to the Royal Marsden for cancer treatment. Samples will be stored within the Centre for Molecular Pathology, a building that brings scientists and clinical staff together for the purposes of translational research.
All new patients attending the hospital receive a patient information leaflet, prior to their first appointment, inviting them to consent for the storage of their tissue and data for future research.
The Generic Biobanking team are trained to take informed consent and will be available to answer any questions when the patients attend registration. This will ensure that the patients are fully informed before signing the consent form.Research programme
The Generic Biobank forms part of the Biomedical Research Centre strategy designed to support complex translational studies and clinical trials. The aim is to develop novel technologies and stratified targeted therapies to help improve patient outcomes and avoid unpleasant side effects in those individual patients that may not require chemotherapy. The availability of a large bank of samples will allow scientists and clinicians to translate discoveries in the laboratory and apply them directly to patients in the clinic, a true bench to bedside approach.
