Data collection arrangements
The Royal Free Biobank allows patients to donate tissue samples for research, that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. Researchers can store human tissue samples that will contribute to understanding disease, making new treatments and diagnostic tools. The samples may be from any clinical procedure that is not needed for diagnosis, and patients are always asked if they are happy for their samples to be collected and stored. Some of the samples may be stored for future, and as yet unknown research. All research which is carried out will be ethically approved by an independent ethical review board.
Research programme
The researchers who use the samples range from internal academic researchers who use samples for research that has been funded by Charities, government funders and possibly industrial collaborators. Samples from clinical trials may use the biobank to store samples, when patients opt into a clinical trial, to run detailed analysis on how the new treatment (or placebo) is working. Commercial researchers may wish to store samples that is part of biomedical research into new drugs and diagnostic tools
