Data collection arrangements
The Royal Free HIV Cohort Study database will hold demographic, clinical and laboratory data from HIV-diagnosed patients attending the HIV outpatient clinic or inpatient service. All data are already collected and recorded (electronically or in patient clinical notes) as part of routine clinical care. No extra tests or information will be requested.
Data will be retained in pseudonymised format for research and analysis purposes on a research database. Patient identifiers will be retained separately to assist in correctly merging records. Stringent controls will be in place to protect the confidentiality, integrity and accessibility of the identifiable data.
Research programme
These data will be used to answer questions about management, treatment response, and outcomes for people with HIV. It is important to include in the database everyone diagnosed with HIV seen at the Royal Free in order to obtain a complete picture of the experience, health and management of people living with HIV, and to make sure everyone is represented. Results of the research will be presented at national and international conferences and published in scientific journals, and lay summaries will be produced for the patient community. In these reports only aggregate data are presented and no individual can be identified. The research may help to improve future treatments and services for people with HIV at the Royal Free and elsewhere.
