Data collection arrangements
The patients coming into the hospital for procedures will sign a consent to treatment form which will include a section on consent for research. This will be accompanied by an information leaflet that will explain the details. If a patient consents for research they will provide us with sample and details which will be recorded within the Trust tissue tracking database and have restricted access.
Consent for research will also be performed with the patients next of kin as part of the post mortem consent form for samples to be used from the deceased. This will also be accompanied by an information leaflet with further details.
Once the samples have been taken from the patient for diagnosis some tissue will be kept within the diagnostic archive for future diagnostic purposes and stored across the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital sites. The samples will be stored within the Laboratory Medicine Histopathology departments. If consented to, these samples will also be used for research purposes provided the necessary approvals are in place.
Research programme
The diagnostic tissue bank will provide samples and data to translational medical research projects in both cardiac and respiratory disease. Samples and data will be used for translational research in respiratory studies and will be used to (1) investigate the physiological effects of cardiovascular or respiratory disease or (2) to test therapeutic agents in vitro (3) genomics and (4) biomarker research. Any tissue proposed for use in research projects will be checked to ensure they have the correct approvals and meet with the Trust research strategy. The diagnostic tissue bank will be publicised on the trust website which will have a range of useful information such as the types of samples available as well as give details of the application process. The tissue bank will also be publicised in hospital newsletters, through networking at scientific meetings and through acknowledgements on publications, presentations and posters.
