Data collection arrangements
The Cardiovascular Research Centre Biobank collects samples and associated clinical data from adult and paediatric patients attending Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust for investigation or treatment of cardiovascular conditions. Family members of Biobank participants may also be invited to donate samples. Standard sample collection includes whole blood, serum and plasma, but other sample types including, cardiac tissue, saliva and urine may also be stored. Clinical data collected may include clinical examination data (e.g. demographic information, height, weight, blood pressure, ECG, laboratory tests), cardiovascular imaging, and patient questionnaires. Over 6000 patients and family members have joined the biobank.
Patients are asked to provide their consent for sample and data sharing with both internal and external research groups including academic and commercial organisations, including consent for genetic research. Patients are given the option of receiving feedback on any genetic results which may be relevant for themselves or their families. Samples are kept in secure storage at Royal Brompton hospital and an off-site biorepository.
Research programme
The primary purpose of the biobank is the identification of new genes or biomarkers linked to cardiovascular disease to aid in the diagnosis and provide information on the prognosis of both common and rare cardiovascular diseases. The collection of clinical outcome data via the use of follow up patient questionnaires, and the option of inviting participants for future clinical tests (biochemical markers, imaging) provides information for researchers on the potential clinical relevance of any biomarker or genes identified. Access to samples and linked anonymised data is provided to researchers both within and external to Royal Brompton & Harefield Trust. Applications to access samples are reviewed by the Science Committee of the Cardiovascular Research Centre. Applications will be reviewed on their scientific merit, compliance with the terms of the ethical approval and patient consent, and the availability of the samples requested.
