Research summary
Due to the increasing demands placed on general practice and the increasing shortage of general practitioners (GPs), ‘role substitution’ is being carried out in many primary care practices. Role substitution refers to the substitution of GPs by allied health professionals such as nurses, pharmacists and physiotherapists to provide general medical services in primary care. That is, allied health professionals taking on roles that would normally be completed by GPs. with the view to help inform prudent health care and the commissioning of general medical services, the aim of this qualitative study is to explore the views of patients, allied health professionals, GPs and receptionists on the substitution of non-medical health professionals proving general medical services instead of GPs.
The specific objectives are as follows:
• To explore the barriers and facilitators to the acceptability, suitability and appropriateness of role substitution in primary care.
• To assess the views of patients, nurses, allied health professionals and GPs regarding the value of care provided by different allied health professionals.
• To identify the views of patients, nurses, receptionists, allied health professionals and GPs regarding role substitution and treating complex cases in primary care.
• To explore the views of patients, allied health professionals and receptionists regarding patient navigation to different health professionalsREC name
