Research summary
This study will be addressing the question is sarcopenia (reduced muscle mass) associated with the more severe spectrum of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)? Studies in adults have indicated that this may be the case. Childhood NAFLD is fast increasing in prevalence and becoming the most common chronic liver disease. We will be studying children 10-16 years of age, we meet eligibility criteria for a liver biopsy. These children will have a DXA scan as part of the study to assess muscle mass and will have various cytokines and myokines associated with sarcopenia measured. We will then assess if there is an association between muscle mass and severity of disease. The study will last 3 years. The information from this study could be used to inform future intervention trials e.g. looking into exercise and NAFLD.
