Research summary
Currently the majority of breast cancer deaths are due to the metastasis of tumour cells to secondary organs. One of the most studied metastatic processes is the migration of cells which have up-regulated metastatic markers which are not present in normal breast cells (for example, CXCR4). The presence of these markers not only allows them to migrate to secondary organs (such as lung), but also trigger a cascade of processes that help the cancerous cell divide and thrive in the new environment. However, much still remains unknown about their specific role and abundance in the different cancers.
