Research summary
We aim to study the role of androgen and other hormones in the development and possible treatment of endometrial cancer and other female genital tract cancers. We will collect samples from cancer patients undergoing surgery in the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead). This means there will be no change in the treatment plan or extra procedures for the patients. We aim to collect surplus tissue, with coordination with the histopathology department. The samples will be anonymised, and the relevant clinical data will be collected (in an anonymised form) to correlate with the results of the analysis. We also aim to retrospectively analyse samples already present in the histopathology department. This will be done in conjunction with collecting clinical data retrospectively for the patients who were diagnosed with gynaecological cancer to highlight risk factors for the development if the various gynaecological cancer subtypes.
The tissue samples will be used to study the role of the androgen and other hormones in various subtypes of endometrial cancer in different grades and stages of the disease as well as how the cancer cells respond to different treatments. Other gynaecological cancer tissue samples might be collected depending on the results of these experiments. During the course of the study/PhD, the samples will be stored in Newcastle University. After completion of the study/PhD, the samples will either:
- Carry on being used by the research group in further research projects studying endometrial cancer.
- Stored in Biobank for future endometrial cancer research
- Discarded in accordance with university procedure.REC name
