Research summary
This project aims to identify non-motor symptoms (NMS) in patients with Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and as such is relevant to the aims of RLS-UK charity; both increasing awareness of RLS and improving treatment. Currently there are no other studies that have tried to look at the whole aspect of NMS in RLS patients, and as such this is an original and novel piece of work.
Some studies have suggested RLS patients experience a range of NMS, including sleep disruption, daytime somnolence, fatigue, anxiety, depression, sexual problems, pain and anhedonia, all with varying degrees of burden. At present there is no standard method to identify these symptoms. This pilot study aims to develop a comprehensive tool that can be used at the bedside allowing patients to self-report NMS and consequently enable clinicians to better address their specific needs. We plan to do this by use of the validated NMS Questionnaire, which was developed by the King's team for Parkinson's patients.
At KCH, substantial cohorts of RLS patients attend regular movement disorder outpatient clinics. Our research team will screen, identify and consent suitable patients to take part in this project. Patients will complete a series of routine clinical questionnaires to assess symptom severity, including a validated Parkinson’s NMS questionnaire. From this questionnaire we will ascertain the most common NMS of RLS. We will then use the findings to develop an RLS specific NMS Questionnaire.
