  The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt NHS Foundation Trust (RJAH) Biobank for Studying Health and Disease acts as a physical repository for biological samples and data collected from patients attending the RJAH. Samples and data are stored at the RJAH Biobank for Health and Disease based at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Biobank includes both existing collections and new material collected prospectively. The Biobank provides a unique opportunity to advance medical research by enabling access to human tissue obtained during routine clinical care that is surplus to diagnostic requirements. The Biobank operates under a high level of research governance, samples are stored within secure and HTA licenced premises and all practices work to HTA standards.

• Research programme

  The RJAH Biobank for Studying Health and Disease supports research projects principally involved in the study of human disease and the normal functioning of the human body. To meet this need, the Biobank stores a full spectrum of normal and pathological specimens. The majorities of samples are originally taken for diagnostic purposes and represent formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue but also tissue which is frozen: all solid tissue is surplus to diagnostic requirements. However blood and blood-derived products and other naturally excreted body fluids such as sputum, saliva, faeces and urine can be specifically collected for the Biobank. The Biobank is managed as a service for users and its aims include: • To facilitate research • To enhance the availability of the Biobank holdings to researchers and support research at RJAH primarily but also to external researchers, both in the UK and abroad • To support with regulatory compliance • To improve research governance
