Research summary
This quantitative retrospective case-control study aims to bridge the gap in the existing literature base and assess the relationship between psychological risk reduction intervention and length of hospital stay and readmission rates for a population of adult male mentally disordered offenders within medium secure care. The study will compare inpatients, who were formally detained in a medium secure service (Reaside Clinic and the Tamarind Centre) within Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation NHS Trust and who successfully completed risk reduction work prior to their discharge with those who did not undertake such intervention work (control group) between 2007 and 2015. It is estimated that approximately 300 former inpatients will be examined for this study.
As participants have not been asked to participate in this study, participants cannot withdraw. All ethical issues have been considered for this study. The BSMHFT Identifying Potential Participants for Research Studies Policy (McDonald, 2014), Care Records Management Policy (Information Governance Steering Group, 2016) and Access to Information Policy (Betney, 2015), allow researchers to recruit participants without patient involvement. Co-investigator, Caitlin Messenger, will conduct the data collection for this study. She is a member of the clinical care team, working under an Honorary Contract for BSMHFT. Mandatory Trust training has been undertaken in Information Governance and Care Records Management under this contract. All patient indefinable data will be anonymised immediately at the point of transcription from the clinical record. The university will receive only anonymised data.
Data collection will take place onsite on a secure password-protected Trust computer. All BSMHFT policies will be adhered to which will also provide further assurances regarding data protection and security. Data collection will take place onsite on a secure password-protected Trust computer. Co-investigator, Dr Victoria Wilkes, will supervise the data collection process. This adheres to BSMHFT policy and ensures this study to be ethically sound.
