Research summary
This research aims to look at the ways different groups of people make sense of the decision to have risk-reducing mastectomy. Women who have chosen risk-reducing mastectomy, surgeons' referral letters to psychologists and online media will form the three different sets of data for this project.
The research will use discourse analysis and takes the stance that language partly shapes a person's experience. Therefore finding out more about how different groups of people use language can help give insight into how people's experiences might also be shaped.
There are three different types of data for this study; 5-10 interviews with women who have chosen to have risk-reducing mastectomy, 10-15 referral letters from surgeons to psychologists written before surgery is approved and a media article that tracks a celebrity's journey through risk-reducing mastectomy.
