Research summary
Patients undergoing X-ray guided endovascular aortic aneurysm repair are exposed to a dose of radiation during their initial operation and then during annual follow-up CT scans. Those who have their aneurysms repairs by an open approach instead are not exposed to this dose of radiation during surgery or follow-up. We will compare the incidence of cancer between these two groups to determine whether this radiation exposure increases the risk of malignancy. This will be done by linking the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database with the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) registry. HES data will be used to identify patients undergoing endovascular and open aneurysm repairs. NCRAS data will be used to determine which of those patients were later diagnosed with cancer.
