Research summary
Community-onset (CO) E. coli blood stream infections (BSIs) are a major cause of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs in the UK: Out of 43,000 E. coli BSI cases between April 2018 and March 2019, 80% were community-onset. However much remains unknown about effective prevention measures. This is a prospective case-control study which aims to identify modifiable risk factors associated with CO E. coli BSIs. Cases will be identified in hospitals by the microbiology department, and controls will be selected by GP practices using a query of electronic patient records. Data on demographic factors, history of illness, recent healthcare interventions, and health-related behaviours will be collected using a questionnaire: administered to cases in hospital and posted to controls.
