Research summary
The present study aims to analyse the causes of Ischaemic stroke in patients’ anti coagulated for atrial fibrillation with Direct Oral Anti Coagulant (DOAC) and Vitamin K Antagonist (VKA). Patients anti coagulated with VKA will serve as a comparison group to patients on DOAC. Providing estimates of the etiologies of stroke in anti coagulated patients will help to tailor better secondary prevention strategies in this important and increasing subgroup of stroke patients.
Primary outcome of this study would be finding out the aetiology of ischaemic strokes in patients on Oral Anti Coagulants for primary or secondary prevention of systemic embolism with AF.
Secondary outcome would be knowing the causes of treatment failure (non-compliance, drug-interactions, non-responder, dosing failure) and the rate of strokes with mixed aetiology.
Data will be collected retrospectively from Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme of Peterborough City Hospital by looking through the medical records including pathology and neuroimaging through electronic patient record system, Anglia ICEREC name
