Research summary
With major advances in the management of children with congenital heart disease (CHD), survival has improved significantly, and most CHD patients reach adult life. The population of adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) has expanded exponentially, with hundreds of thousands of patients in the UK alone. Unfortunately, long-term complications are common in this population, including arrhythmias, heart failure, multiorgan involvement, pulmonary hypertension, need for reoperation, as well as complications around pregnancy and physical activity. It is important that the cardiology community, and especially ACHD specialists, are aware of the evolving nature of this condition and are able to predict and prevent potentially life-threatening complications. \n\nIn this study, we aim to assess the incidence of complications in ACHD patients and identify predictors of outcome from demographic and clinical characteristics. We will focus on common complications, including heart and multiorgan failure, complications around pregnancy and exercise, and perioperative mortality in the overall population and specific anatomical cohorts.\n
