Research summary
Background: Many people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) face challenges returning to work after rehabilitation. Employment is important for financial independence, mental well-being, and social inclusion. However, the ability to return to work could depend on factors such as the level of the injury (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral) and its severity (ASIA grades A-D).
Objective: This study will examine how variations in SCI level and severity affect return-to-work rates.
Methods: We will review medical records of patients who completed inpatient rehabilitation between 2012 and 2022 at the Princess Royal Spinal Injury Centre. Eligible participants will be contacted via phone, email, or during clinic visits to provide consent and share information about their employment status. We will collect details on whether they returned to work, what type of job they have, how long it took to return, quality of life of life, and how satisfied they are with their work situation.
Expected Outcomes: The study will highlight factors that help or hinder people with SCI from returning to work.
Conclusion: The findings will guide improvements in rehabilitation programs, workplace support, and policies to help more people with SCI successfully return to meaningful employment.
