Research summary
This research aims to assess symptoms experienced by women following a third or fourth degree tear- including faecal, urinary and sexual dysfunction. Eligible participants are women who have suffered obstetric anal sphincter injury (third or fourth degree tear) secondary to birth trauma at the Hillingdon Hospital Maternity Unit between 1/11/17-1/06/18. Data will be collected using validated questionnaires- either sent by mail or obtained following telephone consultation.
This study is relevant and of great significance as a recent audit of the 6 week postnatal review at the Hillingdon Hospital of women who had experienced a third or fourth degree tear highlighted that clinicians did not question or counsel women on their return to sexual activity. In addition, the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists estimated that almost a quarter of women can experience some form of sexual dysfunction for up to 3 months postnatally.
