Research summary
Gestational diabetes (GDM) is now known to be associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the mother and also increased risk of type2 diabetes, obesity and cardiac problems in the children. GDM is diagnosed worldwide using the 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and there is wide variation in the cut off used to diagnose GDM. This can lead to under diagnosis and increased complications. The HAPO study published in 2008 recommended that lower cut offs should be applied clinically to reduce complications for the mother and child associated with GDM. This study is aimed at reviewing 10 years of OGTT results and determining the association between different diagnostic cut off and pregnancy complications.
