Research summary
The review of drug treatment outcomes has been commissioned by the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health to “review the evidence on: what can be expected of the drug treatment and recovery system and provide advice to inform future policy”.
While much of the review will be conducted through reviews of the research literature (via the rapid evidence assessment or REA methodology) and analysis of administrative data, PHE is keen to ensure that the experiences of those with personal or familial experience of accessing the drug treatment system and related services is reflected in the advice. Those engaged in problematic drug and/or alcohol use are a highly marginalised group at a time of significant policy change. Within this context, PHE aims to give service users a voice and enable them to share their experiences with a view to fostering greater understanding of some of the issues they face and potentially improve their opportunities in these areas.
The project will run between October and December 2015 and will involve semi-structured group interviews, primarily with existing networks of service users, people in recovery and other experts by experience. Within the limitations of time and resources, the aim is to engage a representative sample of current and former service users including people at all stages of the treatment and recovery process. The aim is to present early findings and initial assumptions and consult experts by experience on the congruity of these findings with their lived experience.
