  • Research summary

A mixed methods research study investigating the effect of the Liverpool & Kirkby dementia care navigator service (Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust) in supporting people living with dementia and their carers. A survey will be provided to carers and people living with dementia before, and 6 months after accessing the dementia care navigation service. The survey will ask whether accessing the service has improved their access to relevant services, whether it has had an impact on their wellbeing and confidence in accessing services. It will also ask for their opinion regarding online service options. Inequalities in access will be identified. The data generated will be analysed using appropriate measures for quantitative data, such as Chi-squared and ANOVA tests.
People living with dementia, carers, dementia care navigators and health and social care professionals will be offered the opportunity to be interviewed regarding their experiences and opinions of the dementia care navigator service. Participants will be asked about the strengths and weaknesses of the service and areas which require improvement. Ethnographic observations will take place of the dementia care navigation sessions. People living with dementia will be included in observations, the survey, workshops and interviews were appropriate, and following a mental capacity assessment where relevant. Analysis will be conducted using thematic analysis processes (Braun & Clarke, 2006). A best practice model for effective dementia care navigator service provision and training will be developed through a series of co-production workshops. Public advisors will be involved at all stages of the research project to guide development, analysis and dissemination.
