  • Research summary

People with chronic pain value work. For many, a job helps inform self-identity. Helping sick and disabled people back to work is known to improve health outcomes, reduce poverty, and improve quality of life and well-being. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) packages may help people with mental health problems to gain and retain employment. With some adaptation, the approach could be suitable for people with chronic pain, who may also have developed mental health problems, but who also need more practical help in overcoming obstacles to return-to-work. We have assembled an expert team with knowledge of chronic pain, and return-to-work. Supported employment packages have been show to be effective in people with mental health problems. With adaptation, they may be effective for people with chronic pain. We will adapt a package for chronic pain and explore the feasibility of delivering it in practice. We have agreements with three large employers who will provide 30 work-placements for people with chronic pain who will be enrolled in this study.
