  • Research summary

Shoulder dislocations often occur whilst playing sport and normally happen in young patients. In order to prevent further dislocations some people require surgery and patients wish to continue playing sport after their surgery.

Surgeons have begun to focus on patient outcome measures to help evaluate the success of a procedure. In the past surgical success has been measured on small variations in degrees of movements of a joint. In reality these measurements did not reflect the function achieved after surgery. Patient outcome measures and the functional ability of a patient after surgery are a far more pragmatic and informative assessment of how successful an operation is.

Returning to sport after surgery has begun to be used as a surgical marker. This has never been evaluated or reported in the literature for the Latarjet procedure and this study aims address this knowledge gap. Inevitably, not all patients will return to sport after their surgery and by using a questionnaire post-operatively we will try to discover the underlying reasons for patients not returning to sport after their shoulder surgery.
