Research summary
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is an important knee stabiliser and its rupture often causes cessation of sporting activity. Surgical reconstruction successfully restores knee stability and patient function, yet many do not return to sport for various reasons. The aim of this study is to assess the rate of return to sport following ACL reconstruction and specifically the factors influencing this. All patients undergoing an ACL reconstruction by a single surgeon over a 7 year period will be examined using medical records and an online questionnaire. The results will help surgeons and athletes decide on when to undergo an ACL reconstruction based on the presence or absence of identified factors, as well as the expected outcome.
