Research summary
The primary aim of this study will be to identify the incidence of coagulation abnormalities within our local treated and untreated Obstetric cholestasis population. The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland suggest these patients are at increased during regional anaesthesia and recommend coagulation studies prior to any central neural axial block. This recommendation is based on old small retrospective studies. Some recent small retrospective studies suggest no incidence of coagulation abnormality in this patient group. We will perform a larger multi centre retrospective observational study in the Wessex Deanery. Using a Five year collection period a sample of 1000 obstetric cholestasis patients should be generated. Demonstration of the incidence of coagulation deficit in this large retrospective analysis will help inform patients and anaesthetists of risk prior to central neuroaxial block without recent blood tests. This will be especially important when emergency caesarian is indicted.
