Research summary
The association between diabetes and hearing loss is known but not fully understood. The underlying causes remain a subject of debate. This study intends to use multiple measurements of hearing to identify if there is a quantifiable difference between the hearing of type-II diabetics with and without known diabetic retinopathy and age-matched controls .
Diabetic patients without known hearing loss or otological problems (such as present or recurrent infection) under the age of 60 will be eligible for this study.
Each data-collection appointment will only take 45-60 minutes and participants will only attend one such appointment. The participant will respond to a brief questionnaire, focusing on their hearing and diabetes, followed by a brief otoscopic examination, pure tone audiometry (PTA), speech testing and the measurement of otoacoustic emissions.
All testing will be within the Audiology department in an appropriately soundproof booth.
