  • Research summary

We intend to perform a comparative study on the amount and distribution of reduced retinal perfusion in patients with severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (no new blood vessels) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (new blood vessel growth). Currently, the diagnosis is purely clinical and only eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy are treated. Therefore, identifying a threshold for the conversion to proliferative advanced diabetic retinopathy changes is required. This is a retrospective study reviewing images already taken of patients with severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. These images are from previously completed studies and the images are all anonymized with no patient identifiable details used. The study will only involve image analysis performed in a single centre. The duration of the study is 4 weeks.
