Research summary
Vascular and neuronal change in the retina (the back of the eye) may occur early in the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this project is to establish if imaging the vasculature and neuronal fibres of the retina improves early disease risk stratification. We will assess 30 participants with AD and 30 participants with MCI recruited from Belfast memory clinics and compare images to normal controls from the Northern Ireland Cohort of Longitudinal Ageing (NICOLA). We aim to use multiple types of retinal image, including novel measures per image type, and assess larger regions in the retina than achieved so far. This study will add greatly to the knowledge base in this rapidly developing area. The ultimate aim would be the use of this non-invasive technology as a biomarker of neurodegeneration and for the selection of suitable participants for clinical trials.
