  • Research summary

The retina shares similar embryologic origin, anatomical (structural) features and physiological properties with the brain. Hence, the retina may offer a unique opportunity to be used as a “window“ of what is happening in the brain (i.e. changes in the retina may run in parallel with those occurring in the brain, including those related to disease). \nThe function and structure of the retina can be easily studied. If studying the retina were to provide information also about the brain, diseases of the brain could be potentially recognised earlier, by retinal testing. Moreover, by studying the retina, we could advance understanding of brain diseases and develop and test new treatments. \nIn RECOGNISED we will be testing if the degeneration of the brain that occurs in people with type 2 diabetes could be diagnosed by testing the retina and whether by studying the retina we could predict who will develop cognitive decline and dementia. \nIn RECOGNISED we will do a prospective, cross sectional, observational (non-interventional) study in people with type 2 diabetes and mild diabetic retinopathy; those diagnosed of having mild cognitive impairment (and a small group of people without it who act as controls) will be invited then to take part also in a prospective, longitudinal, observational (non-interventional) study and followed for a period of 30 months. Several tests to evaluate the function and structure of the retina and brain will be done.
