Research summary
People with many different long-term health conditions can improve their quality of life by joining group exercise and support programmes. People with long-term problems after a stroke may also benefit. Online group rehabilitation programmes have become more common since the COVID-19 pandemic. These programmes can improve fatigue, mood, and fitness, helping people return to their daily lives. We want to find out if a stroke rehabilitation programme, supervised by trained staff and delivered online to people living at home, can help people with long-term problems after a stroke feel better.
We will test 2 treatments:
1) a single online session of advice and support.
2) a 10-week supervised, live online, home-based, group exercise and recovery support
programme.
We will place 600 people at random in either the advice group or the supervised group and follow them up for 12 months. Only by doing this, will we find out if online rehabilitation is any better than a single session of advice for improving the lives of people with long-term problems after a stroke.1. Pre-pilot to adapt, refine and test intervention materials, delivery, and practitioner training, and prepare trial set-up.
2. Internal pilot with formative process evaluation to test recruitment and trial procedures.
3. Main trial with embedded process evaluation.REC name
