Research summary
Acute asthma and hay fever attacks are often triggered by infections, in particular Human Rhinovirus (RV). The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between asthma/hay fever and RV infection in a widely used laboratory model. We will collect nasal epithelial cells from healthy volunteers and volunteers with asthma and/or hay fever, recruited from local advertising. The volunteers will fill in a questionnaire that will define whether they are healthy donors or have asthma/hay fever. We will also collect from them blood samples, from which we will retrieve cells to culture according to established protocols. We will also do skin testing to see if they are allergic to some airborne allergen. Epithelial cells and cultured cells will be infected with RV and/or treated with other substances such as histamine. Then we will compare the responses between the cells of healthy, asthmatic and/or people with hay fever.
