  • Data collection arrangements

Patient data collected during normal clinical care at the Respiratory Medicine department at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. This will include patient demographics, diagnoses, laboratory results (e.g. blood tests), imaging data (e.g. radiology, x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans), medications and treatment data, breathing and exercise test results.

  • Research programme

We wish to investigate data collected during routine patient care in the Respiratory Medicine department at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Research will include: 1) To evaluate current methods of diagnosis and assessment of lung disease or respiratory conditions. 2) To examine the outcome of treatments in different groups of patients 3) To identify new uses of current methods of assessment and treatment 4) To use large amounts of data collected from routinely performed tests to improve our understanding of disease and diagnostic and treatment strategies, generating new research questions that can be tested in future clinical trials and studies. Analysis of clinical data held on the hospital database will also enable studies of population health, the natural history of disease, and the safety profile and effectiveness of treatment methods used in daily Respiratory Medicine practice. The database will primarily support research in the Sheffield Academic Directorate of Respiratory Medicine, but we will be open to requests from researchers outside Sheffield who may wish to use data for research into respiratory disease. Before data is provided to researchers, identifiable details (such as patient names, addresses etc.) will be removed so researchers cannot identify patients from using the data.
