Research summary
Haematological malignancies and their treatments often precipitate a state of acquired immunodeficiency that predisposes to respiratory complications including infections and the development of bronchiectasis, an airway disease characterised by irreversible dilatation of the bronchi associated with chronic airway inflammation. Pulmonary complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality amongst patients with haematological malignancies, hence we would like to understand the occurrence of these complications better. We propose to examine patients with haematological malignancies, treated at UCLH, to identify risk factors associated with the development of pulmonary complications, particularly respiratory infection and bronchiectasis. The data will be obtained from review of existing electronic patient records. This information will aim to better identify those patients at risk of developing pulmonary complications, and allow earlier initiation of preventative and protective measures.
