Research summary
Adjustment to care home life is a process that occurs over time. Part of understanding this process requires recognition of variances in the responses of adults whose permanent move to a care home was either planned or unplanned. Research into the experiences of people moving into a care home facility has tended to focus on the physical changes that take place rather than the psychological and/or social changes that these transitions may also involve even where other dimensions of change are studied, these are usually from a service rather than residents' perspective. This study aims to increase our understanding of how adults make this transition into a care home over a period of twelve months which has not been explored within the current literature.
Aim of Study
To explore residents’ experiences of moving from home to a care home over a one year period.Design of the study
A qualitative research design, using a grounded theory (GT) approach will guide this study. In this study the focus is on individuals’ perceptions of the process of transition to life in a care home, the emphasis will be on exploring the experiences of residents' in order to produce rich qualitative data that will make clear the process of transition. Participants will be interviewed face to face, in their homes/care homes using broad, open-ended questions that address their experience of physical, psychological and social well-being before and after entry to the care home. The interviews will take place on four occasions i.e. prior to admission to care home, 4-6 weeks after arrival, at 4-5 months and a final interview at 9-12 months after moving to care home.
The study is part of a PhD programme that will last 6 years.
