Research summary
The benefits of dietician and psychological support in tier three bariatric services are well documented. UK bariatric units work closely with dieticians to achieve weight loss or weight stability as a precursor to bariatric surgery. In
contrast there is a relative paucity of data about exercise programmes after bariatric surgery. We hypothesise that postoperative exercise programmes, with a focus on resistance or strength based training, may reduce muscle loss
and loss of beneficial fat free mass. We propose to study the acceptability, feasibility and efficacy of resistance based training in the bariatric surgery population.
Our first step is a questionnaire, distributed to our bariatric patients with consent, to gauge current exercise levels and willingness to participate in an exercise programme. All information from the questionnaire will be anonymised for use
and publication. Information will not influence decision making about bariatric surgery during the research period.
The second step will be conducting semi-structured interviews and focus groups to gather qualitative data on physical activity, with a focus on resistance based training in this cohort. This will also include qualitative data from bariatric
surgery health care professionals to find out about current challenges and barriers to delivering physical activity and exercise post-operative advice within the bariatric team.REC name
