Research summary
A tooth tissue collection will be established in the University of Dundee Dental Hospital and School (The Dental School). Its purpose is to provide teeth removed as part of routine dental care (excess body tissue not required for diagnosis or future treatment) for use in laboratory dental research. The research investigates the dental diseases of dental caries and dental erosion as well as the effectiveness of materials, devices and medicaments in their prevention and treatment.
The collection will not be used for any genetic research as; i) explicit consent from donors is required for this type of research and ii) such research could potentially identify the donor.
The collections existence will be registered with the Tayside Tissue Bank (TTB) and governance will be provided by them. They support this initiative. This involves both application for teeth and granting of ethical approval for their use by delegated authority.
