  • Research summary

    In early 2017, Manchester City Council’s Population Health and Wellbeing Team commissioned researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University to undertake a piece of research on nature and prevalence of DRL in Manchester. The research aims to increase the knowledge and understanding around DRL, and provide recommendations on how to reduce or stop incidents through appropriate service development and provision.

    The key objectives of the research are to:

    - provide a review of current UK guidance and good practice on needle and syringe exchange provision (including disposing of used needles and syringes), and identify how this is implemented locally;
    - gain a clearer understanding of occurrence/hotspots/rate of recurrence across the city;
    - ascertain the views of users, practitioners and local communities, and gain insight/views on why the problem occurs and what can be done to reduce incidents;
    - identify gaps in service provision and identify any staff training/knowledge needs/strengths; and,
    - provide options and recommendations on how to reduce or stop incidents of DRL in Manchester.
