Research summary
Bariatric and metabolic endoscopy - procedures that seek to improve obesity and type 2 diabetes - are of increasing interest. There are a variety of procedures, some of which are now being provided as NICE- and NHS-approved interventions. Despite there being sufficient outcome evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of these treatments in helping people to lose weight or improve control of type 2 diabetes, very little focus has actually been investigated in how these procedures achieve their effect.
We seek to conduct biological sample collection and health questionnaire completion for people who are already undergoing procedures and follow-up as part of their usual NHS care. We will conduct this sample collection without additional clinic visits and without change to the usual care pathway or additional procedural steps. We will then analyse these samples to look for patterns and explanations and mechanisms underlying a response (or lack thereof) to treatment.In a small number, we will also ask for matched samples from patients who are having bariatric surgery, or receiving weight loss medication, where the biological mechanisms that underlie improvement are better understood, so that we can compare data.
In addition to assessment of samples we will perform body composition scans via DEXA before and after their intervention to further understand the mechanism of weight loss
