  • Research summary

Advanced age is associated with an increased risk of dementia. As life expectancy rises, in the majority of countries, the number of older people in the global population is growing rapidly. The escalating human and economic burden of dementia necessitates more research in this field. To progress our understanding, more studies into the causes and prevention of dementia, and studies into the treatment and care of people living with dementia, are required. To facilitate this important research, and to ensure it is of high quality and value, it is imperative that the research governance system is efficient at providing effective oversight for these studies in a timely manner. To understand how research governance works in practice for dementia studies in the UK, it is important to seek the views of those people who interact with the system. Stakeholders responsible for the conduct, management and approval of such research have a valuable perspective of how the system functions and what could be improved. This study aims to explore the research governance of dementia studies from the perspectives of these professional stakeholders using qualitative interviews. Approximately 25 professional stakeholders from the UK will be recruited, including members of dementia research teams, research and development (R&D) staff and Research Ethics Committee (REC) members. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with the participants, and the discussions will be facilitated using diagrams and reference material. A thematic analysis of the data will be produced.
