Data collection arrangements
The Lower Your Drinking (LYD) self-assessment and intervention pathway research database will include people who are using the pathway to reduce their alcohol use, who consent for their data to be collected and stored, and for their anonymous and non-identifiable information to be used for research and evaluation. CCGs in the UK who commission the LYD pathway will provide access to the pathway to their patients, by offering access to the pathway, or through patients self-referring. Minimal demographic data is collected and stored on the LYD pathway database, with the only identifiable information collected being email address and postcode. Non-identifiable and anonymous information regarding the participants' alcohol problems and different aspects of their lifestyle will also continue to be collected via a battery of psychometric assessments contained in the LYD pathway and these data will also be stored on the database. In addition, the database captures data regarding the particular psychosocial intervention strategies each user accesses and completes, and also information such as time spent on each strategy.
Research programme
The collection and analysis of the anonymous online data will be performed as part of a research programme into the effectiveness of the LYD self-assessment and intervention pathway in helping people to reduce their alcohol use. This research programme has been informed by the Medical Research Council (MRC) guidance around the development and evaluation of complex behavioural-change interventions, and examines not only clinical effectiveness, but also implementation of such interventions in real-world treatment settings which may be particularly relevant for digital interventions what may be perceived as ‘disruptive’. Additionally, as the MRC guidance highlights the importance of examining mechanism of action of complex, multi-component interventions, data will be continued to be used to examine whether completion of specific intervention strategies in the LYD pathway is associated with specific clinical outcomes. This research will be relevant to multiple fields of health and social care, alcohol treatment, digital health and mental health. Data collected are intended to continue to address a number of specific research questions posed by a number of studies, including randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and long-term follow-up of previous and current users.
