  • Data collection arrangements

The Academic Directorate of Diabetes & Endocrinology and the Sheffield Diabetic Eye Screening Service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust use clinical databases managed by the Clinical Informatics department to ensure maximum patient confidentiality within the secure STH network. The clinical databases are used to enter patient data including demographics, physiology results, and diagnosis following clinical assessment. These databases have been adapted to allow the collection of information from patients who prospectively provide written consent to be contacted about future clinical research and/or for their data to be used anonymously for research purposes. Consent forms will be stored in the secure Directorate Research Office.

Data will be collected, handled and stored according to local and national governance procedures, and will include:
    1. Basic Demographics
    2. Standard biomedical measurements
    3. Retinal photographs
    4. Measurements relevant for specific research studies
    5. Diagnostic codes, entered by clinician responsible for patient
    6. Medication codes

The database will be used to efficiently identify patients eligible for recruitment into specific clinical research studies, and for using routine clinical data to study the course of disease and effectiveness of healthcare used in daily medical practice.

  • Research programme

The Academic Directorate of Diabetes & Endocrinology and the Sheffield Diabetic Eye Screening Service are large research active departments. They offer specialist assessment and treatment for people with diabetes and its associated complications including those of the retina, and endocrine conditions for patients in Sheffield and its surrounding areas. This database will allow us to better understand the benefits and limitations of treatment as well as understanding the barriers to accessing care. We have a strong track record for clinical research in these areas and the continuation of the Research Database will allow us to undertake more studies, faster and more efficiently. The Database will continue to support recruitment to NIHR portfolio studies (commercial and non-commercial) and build our reputation for delivering clinical research to time and target.
