  • Research summary

This research is to gain knowledge surrounding rescue medication packs (antibiotics and steroids) for patients with a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who are at risk of frequent exacerbations and admission to hospital.
The aim is to understand patient’s perceptions and experiences to gain a better understanding of their interpretation, education, experience and understanding of rescue medication. This research will help to inform practice for non-medical prescribers within the community nursing team, to promote consideration to the appropriateness of the rescue pack for individual patients, consider antimicrobial stewardship (not always infective exacerbation), consider steroid use / misuse, consider financial implications of prescribing a rescue pack and lastly education for patients (Whether this needs improving).

Participants will be selected through the community nursing caseload who meet the criteria of diagnosis of COPD, over 18 years of age, used rescue medication minimal once, and who is on the community nursing caseload. Approximately 10-15 participants will aim to be recruited and will receive participant information sheet and consent form. A survey which will consist of 15 open questions will be produced.
The survey will be produced either on a QR Code, URL (website link) or paper copy with a prepaid supplied envelope depending on participant preference.
