Research summary
The study entitled ‘Repurposing nitisinone as a new tool to fight the spread of malaria'’ is an experimental study to investigate the effects of feeding blood isolated nitisinone treated AKU patients on lab reared mosquitoes. This study aims to provide important information on how nitisinone could be used to kill blood sucking insects such as mosquitoes, which spread malaria in the tropics. Blood will be obtained from our AKU patients who currently take nitisinone and fed to the mosquitoes. We aim to collect 15 blood samples from 15 patients. The samples will be collected at the Liverpool Foundation Trust Hospital and then transferred to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
