Research summary
The study aims to complete a survival analysis (a type of statistical analysis in which the time it takes for one event to occur or repeat itself after an initial event happens is analysed) relating to patients who are identified as being alcohol related frequent attenders to hospitals in NHS Grampian. Alcohol Related Frequent Attenders normally attend hospital approximately three times in one calendar year. The analysis will look into the time in between frequent attenders appearances to emergency care services, as evidence shows that in regards to admissions to hospital that relate to alcohol admissions, 93% are seen through emergency care outputs. The information gathered will be compared to the records of the Alcohol Liaison Service (a service led by a trained nursing team to help patients with alcohol related issues redirect the care they need into community based projects and treatments rather than always using hospital resources unless necessary) in operation at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary to assess whether those that attend the service are seen in emergency care less or more than those that do not. From here recommendations can be provided to the Alcohol Liaison Service to help improve their service and help orchestrate its practices in line with the patient needs that present themselves in the NHS Grampian health board.
