  • Research summary

Title - Renal Dialysis: A Comparative Study Of Home vs In-Centre Treatment Uptake. \nResearch Question - β€œAre there certain demographics who are not enrolling in home dialysis programmes.”\nThis research will use a questionnaire that will be handed out to, and completed by, dialysis patients in a dialysis clinic (Lister Hospital, Stevenage) and dialysis unit (Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow). The data from the questionnaire will categorise dialysis patients by age, gender, ethnic background, and occupation, to find out if there is a significantly large number of patients from a particular category avoiding home dialysis. The main aims are to highlight relevant barriers to home dialysis for each group, and determine if a particular group could be targeted for home haemodialysis in the future. This information can be used to improve future patient consultations, and could increase the number of home dialysis patients, which is suggested by research to be beneficial.\nLister Hospital, Stevenage is part of East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust also own the dialysis satellite unit that is located at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow. The results will also be given to the Lister Hospitals R&D department to help provide statistical information that could provoke further research in this area, and potentially be developed into a strategy to save East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust money and improve dialysis patients lives. This research may also be applicable to other NHS trusts or provoke similar national studies. This research is part of an MSc degree and is self funded.\n
