Research summary
To prove that patients are able to safely take their own finger-prick blood samples at home for Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) monitoring. If successful, this would mean that patients would not have to go to their GP or hospital to have a blood sample taken for PSA measurement and therefore reduce their exposure to potential infection, as well as saving them time and energy. It would also reduce the appointment burden on GP and hospital staff. The study would be open to anyone in Greater Manchester with prostate cancer who currently attends their hospital in order to provide a blood sample for PSA measurement.
Initial recruitment would occur at planned urology clinics at NHS hospitals in Greater Manchester, starting at Royal Bolton Hospital. At recruitment, patients will be asked to take their finger prick sample using a blood sample collection kit from Neoteryx, a microsampling device manufacturer. A traditional blood sample will also be taken as part of their normal care to make sure the results are comparable.
After recruitment, patients will be sent a microsampling kit when their next PSA measurement is due. They will take a finger prick sample themselves and return it to the lab via the post. We will then measure PSA in the sample and report the result back to the patient and their care team.
