Research summary
Life expectancy for people with Cystic Fibrosis has increased since new gene modulator therapies were introduced in the UK in 2021. One negative effect from the modulators is that the incidence of cardiometabolic disease is increasing in this population. Little is known about whether exercise influences metabolic markers such as fasting triglyceride levels, fasting insulin and glucose levels, blood pressure and waist circumference in people with CF as it does in the general population. By better understanding how exercise might influence certain metabolic health in people with CF we will be able to better inform healthy living guidelines to tackle issues this population now face.
This project aims to investigate whether an 8-week remotely delivered and monitored combined exercise intervention alongside daily activity targets can improve cardiovascular and cardiometabolic health in people with Cystic Fibrosis. Our aims are to characterize cardiometabolic health risk profiles in this population; understand whether a remotely designed and monitored exercise intervention improves activity levels in people with Cystic Fibrosis; explore whether any change in cardiometabolic health risk profiles can be influenced by such a physical activity intervention. We hypothesise that specific indicators of cardiovascular or metabolic syndrome risk will improve from before to after the exercise programme. The remote design of the project has been developed after PPIE work with people with Cystic Fibrosis through the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
